Relationship with Vic: +3

Acted as a mentor (sort of), helped establish Vic's reputation as a town hero twice, set him on the path to adventure. Potential NPC or cohort for later

Vigilante life: -2 or +2

While Vic is the town hero, he denies being the Vigilante (and doesn't quite match the fleeting physical descriptions either, as Sul was always careful to adopt disguises as well as make himself physically larger/stronger). Similar to Batman's effect in Gotham, some people (from law enforcement to criminals to the commoner) welcome him, others loathe and fear him, and some just don't believe he exists.

Regional Changeling fear/hate: -4

I rate this one highly (even though it doesn't relate directly) as several decades of unsolved suicide/murders have stirred a new level of racial suspicion/hate against Changelings

detective: -2

While most of the suicide/murders are baffling unsolved mysteries, a particularly gifted young detective (trying to make her reputation by solving these old crimes and who feels an inexplicable connection to the case) is sniffing through old case files and putting clues together. Potential NPC, BBEG, or whatever later; possibly Sul’s daughter as plot hook

Tanner: +1

Partially responsible for creating the dark companion while trying to heal Sul; may inadvertently have further divided his psyche.

Family: -1

Sul’s family does not know what happened to him; no body was ever found. They have no closure.

circumstances of death: -1

Something or someone or some organization had ulterior motives for killing him. Plot hook left open for DM to do whatever.

Cabinet of Faces: -4

Because Sul did did kill two of their agents, but more embarrassing is that he has eluded their grasp, which just makes them want to find him even more. oh heck, these guys could wind up being BBEGs or the saving grace or whatever (no one knows what their exact motivations are)

Githyanki (and maybe a dragon): -1

Sul has one of their silver swords (which was likely stolen from them by the Cabinet of Faces), and they want it back. It is a matter of honor and racial pride. If Fil is feeling particularly evil/scary, Githyanki also have ties to red dragons. Perhaps this sword was originally bequeathed to a Githyanki after some particular faithful service to the big red. This would give the Githyanki even more reason to want it back, and heaven help us if we ever encounter a dragon that recognizes the weapon.

Spirit World: -1

When he was crazy and committing all those murder/suicides, the evil spirits simply let him do his thing. Good spirits are generally scarce deep in the cities, so never noticed him before. Now that he’s reformed and traveling further from the city centre, the spirit world can see him, and can detect the taint of evil on him. They can also sense that he is "different" (partially due to his past, and partially due to his dual nature), and even spirits are suspicious of the unknown.

  • hmm, maybe somewhere down the line the spirit world sends a Marut after him to try to put him to rest. Oh and would you look at that, I just happen to be looking for a nice powerful construct body to possess... (assuming we can defeat it, the Marut is no pushover).
  • edit: drat, but now I just remember that possessing a body via my malevolence body doesn't let me use their SU or SLAs, which diminishes the appeal greatly. Maybe I'll just stick with advancing the fleshy construct types (flesh, dragonflesh, demonflesh, etc.) since then I'd be able to use my warshaper/changeling abilities. What do you guys thing?

that looks good. nice presentation.

Cabinet of Faces

(This started off as an attempt to explain how I got a magic item... and it sort of turned into a whole faction background. Oh well)

More info about the Cabinet of Faces is found in Races of Eberron

- the Cabinet of Faces is a secret cabal, comprised principally of dopplegangers and changelings

- they have agents in all levels of government and industry

- the agenda behind the Cabinet of Faces is unknown

- the general populace does not even know of its existence

- the Cabinet of Faces however, is the most popular line of clothing and cosmetics in the country, which serves as a tidy source of income as well as money laundering

- many of their products (makeup, perfumes, even detergents), when used in certain combinations or when exposed to outside reagents can produce varying effects, such as weakening a subject’s resistance to suggestion, or poison, or other psychotropic effects

- stronger elements are combined with magic as well.

- many of their clothing items have similar properties, or enhance the effects of other elements

- these are some of the many tools their agents use to further advance themselves into positions of power and security

- the “veiled” style of fashion was popularized by the Cabinet over 30 years ago, with clothing that typically covers a majority of the body, and headpieces with gauzy to opaque facial coverings.

- while the veiled style popularity has waned in the last decade it is still fairly common, especially in the poorer regions (which are typically behind in style anyways)

- part of the marketing behind the veiled style was to create a sense of allure and mystique (even amongst both genders); headpieces were even marketed as ways to protect from the sun and insects, and during the more industrial wartimes when pollution became more problematic, as a means to healthier breathing (such as a magical ‘‘veil of clean air’’, which filtered out smog, pollens and mild airborne toxins)

- many of their clothes also have special weaves to them (trade secret) that gives them a soft yet durable quality, and which allegedly make them more amenable to magical enhancement

- part of the Cabinet’s reasoning behind the push of the veiled style was to create a line of clothing that obscured recognizable features

- Changelings as a racial whole face a lot of discrimination, so anything that makes it easier for them to blend in is a welcome reprieve

- so perhaps there was some altruistic motive for the Cabinet to create the veil style
