Orvelios, Knight of Twilight

History

During the beginnings of the last war, not even a decade after it had set off, a Karrnathi force, self named the Stavline Wolves Cadre after their commander, was sent through the Eldeen Reaches, during their trek, they regretfully engaged with several of the keepers of the wild.  This clash ended in the defeat of the Eldeen Reaches inhabitants, but there was a sole survivor; a boy that seemed near one year old, a beautific being with a singular trait that drew the eyes of the commander of the expedition:  This boy had soft feathery white wings like that of a bleached raven.  Not unfathomably, this was something that sparked the interest of the Cadre, for none of them had heard or seen anything like it.  Stavline himself took custody of the boy; for one he saw it as a possible chance for promotion and power as well as bringing in a being that could serve Karrnath well, and for the other less applicable reason, he felt a slight bit of sorrow for the situation he had put him in.

Stavline did recieve part of what he hoped for, he was commended and his Cadre was given a very hefty reward by the Karrnathi military; they were always looking for ways to gain the advantage and end the war quickly in those early days.  However as this achievement had not been a true military victory, he could not receive any sort of promotion.  Irregardless, he claimed the right to be the boy's gaurdian, and was granted this last request.  Stavline named the boy Orvelios, after the tale of a great angel that had entraped a fiend that threatened to entrap the world in unending darkness.  This name, and the reason behind it may have been a divinely inspired ironic joke as his Cadre often joked later on in his life, but it even might have had much more significence to that.

Since there was a war going on, Stavline and the Cadre were not always there to take care of Orvelios in the formative years; they did not think it wise to take such a young looking child with them into fierce battles with high chances of death.  As such Orvelios was often left with those that had to stay behind for one reason or another, from injuries that were not healed because of the strain on healers resources, to the kind wives and family of the soldiers that were trying their best to keep up their lives at home.  Of the dozens that cared for Orvelios, only the descendents of four families still bear relevance and exist today.

There was Jacelyn, the wife of the soldier gates, a gigantic man who earned his name by the fact that enmeshed in his armor, he very literally was a gate in any doorway.  Jacelyn was the primary caretaker of Orvelios in her time.  It was from Jacelyn that Orvelios first garnered his penchant and devotion to learning.  Jacelyn was a very avid reader, and a well versed person in many subjects, since her husband was off to war her duties as a housewife had lessened greatly and had allowed her the time of day to carry about her passion.  She passed this passion on well to Orvelios, who spent many hundreds of hours reading and debating a wide variety of subjects with her.  She started to teach him and to read to him as soon as he was brought to her the month after the decision was made to allow Stavline to keep him.  Even as young as he was at the time, Orvelios took well, and learned how to read within a few months time.  It was very surpising to her and many of the others who heard about it, for not many were even capable of forming thoughts at that young an age, but to others it boded well for the hopes that had been placed on Orvelios for serving the country.

Of all those that Orvelios knew form his formative years, perhaps Jacelyn had the softest, longest life, and the easiest passage into the realms of the dead.  Jacelyn lived for all of seventy four long fulfilling years; she watched as first the child she raised grew into a great man and continued to honor many of the ideals she held dear, and then she watched as her own true children from her husband Gates grew and even served with, and under this man many times.  Throughout her life she was never in any real danger, the closest to war and battle she came was through her husband and the various warnings and preparations throughout the countryside.  After Gates had lost a leg in a battle, she no longer had to fear for her husband's life, and their livilhood was well protected by the Karrnathi military veteran system.  By the end of her time Jacelyn had truly felt that she had fulfilled her work in life, bringing Orvelios to be the person he was, and raising her family well at the same time.  Jacelyn's descendents still are alive today, with her grandson Bevil being the oldest, at the age of seventy eight, a senior man with whom Orvelios often goes to simply speak of tales and the old times, a former mage of the Cadre.  Her great granddaughter Navra is aged at fifty four, a still formidable woman in the affairs of the Karrnathi military, one who has risen above the ranks of the Cadre but still often honors her ties theirein.  Finally Jacelyn's great great grandson and granddaughter, twins named Aela and Orelo, currently serve in the Stavline Wolves Cadre, Aela, the female, in the capacity of an elite skirmisher and tactical striker, and Orelo in the capacity of the oft appreciated mender of wounds and divine spokesman.

Another person that Orvelios spent time with was the smart mouthed Cadeus, one of the envoys and representatives that the Stavline Wolves Cadre sent to report in to the higher ups on their current state, and to assist in the planning of anything involving the Cadre's next moves thereof.  Cadeus' role required him to keep abreast of the war in its many forms, and thus he was often relegated to duty within the capital itself, simply advocating the interests of the Cadre within the military; since he had much time on the side form these duties he often mentored Orvelios as he himself learned.  From Cadeus Orvelios drew a keen understanding of war itself, how it was fought, why it was fought, and what all the costs were on the side.  Orvelios draws knowledge and maxims to this day from his old mentor, many a time Orvelios' strike force has seen him pacing and wandering through the alleyways of his mind, and when asked he replies that he is simply recalling a lesson he was taught by Cadeus.  Sadly, Cadeus was not able to live as full a life as Jacelyn had.  He died soon after Orvelios started service from a raid as he was traversing across Karrnath.  Cadeus has no declared descendents, though he was a great womanizer and Orvelios would not be altogether surprised to learn of an illegitimate child.

The third individual of relevance was, strangely enough, a mercenary healer, a person who would go into the thickest of combats and keep up all his wards to the best of his ability.  This role differs greatly from that of what normal priests, or house Jorasco provides, for not many will willingly go into the dangerous and deadly combats.  Lelivo was his name, and he was extremely happy to be another of Orvelios' mentors.  His services could not always be bought, he had an oddly contradictaory personality, being an extremely cautious person, and thus would charge high, and sometimes unreasonable rates.  However, he was curious to the nature of the strange lad with wings, and thought it might have been a divine opportunity.  Lelivo was not a member of the regular religions of the world; he had crafted his own personal philosophy and and his prayers went out towards divinity as a whole rather then a singular divine essence.  Lelivo taught Orvelios many of the arts of the divine, and instructed Orvelios on how to construct his own personal philosophy; for he did not believe that a forced religion would ever amount to anything of true worth in a person.  Lelivo's fate is left for future events to describe.

Finally the last person that took major care of Orvelios was his own adopted father, Stavline himself.  Stavline was a fair man; that was the the best of feelings that Orvelios felt about him as he was being raised.  Stavline was harsh, he used to be a drill sargeant, and it showed through his discipline and teachings of Orvelios.  He ran Orvelios ragged, pushing him through combat training and fighting to the greatest of effects.  He showed him how to battle and anticipate the enemies movements, to look for their weak points, and hundreds of other moment to moment fighting tactics, all through horribly bruising examples and lessons.  As Orvelios grew into the man he has become today, he started to understand just how much Stavline had helped him survive and prosper with these lessons, and was able to form a much greater bond with the man, as well as dropping his former bad feelings about him.  Stavline eventually married at a late age, and he had a daughter.  His daughter died in the prime of her life from a wasting sickness that was not identified fast enough, but her child survived, Nacella Stavline.  Nacella Stavline maintained contact with the Cadre and Orvelios for many years, but never married, and in the past ten years has vanished.  The only clues to her wherabouts came with abandoned sheafs of paper showing research done on Sarlona, Xendrik, and Argonnesson, with vast hints of something that one would not wish to delve into.

When Orvelios reached the age of thirteen, he was sent off to learn at the Rekkenmark Academy, under tuition of the Karrnathi governemnt, who were placing a vested interest in him.  Orvelios did not dissapoint those who were sponsering him; all the knowledge he had gained so far from his four main caretakers, and the misc dozens of others who had taken part in his raising had given him a distinct advantage in learning the material that Rekkenmark taught, in addition to his natural intelligence.  In fact, Orvelios mastered the knowledge inherent in the Rekkenmark Academy so well, that he was sent with the senior students to take place in a series of theological and informational debates between the Academy, and members of the Twelve to sharpen the students and provide the masses with entertainment.  He did extremely well in this event, so much so he was praised by one of the higher members of the Twelve, and even told that he could always find safety within their doors.  In any case, Orvelios graduated with honors form the Rekkenmark Academy at the age of eighteen, the absoulte minimum anyone could have done.

From there Orvelios went directly into the service of Karrnathi military, and under the Stavline Wolves Cadre.  Coming out of the academy, Orvelios had shown himself to have an adept hand at both combat and some minor knowledge in the arts of healing and other faithful casting arts; owing much to his prior training with Lelivo.  As such he was placed in a near training capacity, stationed at most times near the back lines of the battles, and given instructions to watch Lelivo and how he went about his craft.  Orvelios voiced words of dissent at these orders, for he very much so wished to prove himself, but he obeyed his commands as a soldier ought to do.  For around a year Orvelios served in this capacity, and garnered trust within the Stavline Wolves Cadre, and his ignorant blood lust was even sated a time or two when enemies broke through the front lines.  He came to be known as a very dependable person, someone who was true to his word whenever he gave it, and most everyone with the Cadre itself liked him.  He even managed to convince Lelivo to lower his rates to a degree, for the man genuinly liked being near Orvelios.

After he had gotten settled into his role, Orvelios started the practice of truly applying his learning in the Rekkenmark Academy; he started to survey the battlefield and look at all the tactical opportunities inherent in it.  It was also at this time that he first truly started his experiments with his natural flying capacity.  Until this point Orvelios had simply not had a chance to fly, it was also pushed off, and more important pursuits were always at hand; his curiosity about the issue was always sated, because he could truly do it anytime he wanted, and thus it lost much of its allure.  However, when he started to survey the battlefield, Orvelios realized he often wanted a better position to see from.  First, when he knew there was no danger from archers or enemy mages to single him out, Orvelios started to a series of small jumps, pumping his wings to give him much larger heights for viewing then he could have possibly reached before.  This eventually extended into take offs, and glides that allowed him much longer times aloft.  Eventually, he was even able to train his wing muscles enough to hold him in the air as long as he could reasonably march.  This activity was viewed with great feelings by most of the Cadre; they all realized what could be gained if Orvelios truly started to realize this part of his instict, someone with flight capabilities over extended periods of time would provide huge tactical advantages.

And so he did; the first time Orvelios demonstrated his tactical mind in true applications, he potentially saved Karrnath from being subjected to a crippling strike by Cyre.  As Orvelios was practicing his flying over the battlefield, for he was confused as to why the Cyrans had so much lower numbers then reported, and were not using anywhere near their magical or projectile capabilities, he started to piece together a few key facts.  First he realized that the fight was taking place near a House Orien major Lightning Rail, a curiosity that he had only had chance to ride once or twice before.  Next he saw that the Cyran forces were being held in reserve, a lot farther back, and nearly unreachable from the battlefield.  Finally, he saw preperations being made to board a newly, constructed by the military, Train on the tracks with preperations for loading being made.  Then it all clicked to him, the disposition of the forces, how the fighting Cyrans were simply delaying the Karrnathi army and providing an opening for the true force to shoot past nearly all lines of defense on the lightning rail.

Orvelios went into action immediately, during his studies at the side of Jacelyn, Orvelios had read an account on the maintenence of the Lightning Rails; it was a book whose production stopped nearly days after it started, for House Orien did not want the information on Lightning Rails to leak out, however the damage was done, as Orvelios was soon to demonstrate.  Swooping down towards the tracks of the Lightning Rail, Orvelios barked out a few words to his companions, telling them that he was doing something monumentous.  At the moment it might have looked like he was deserting, but the truth came out soon after his deed was done.  Orvelios surveyed the areas of the Lightning Rail, and managed to locate several of the stress points that would break under the least degrees of pressure.  Of course, the "Least degrees of pressure" were still greater then nearly anything that Orvelios could generate with his own strength.  Thus he had to improvise, Orvelios managed to find a rock that was heavy enough, and shaped right enough, while still not too heavy for him to fly at.  Orvelios took the rock and flew up, and up, and up as far as he could go while still keeping sight of the tracks.  He went so far up, so far up straight that his head even touched the clouds.  Orvelios could only pray that his aim was true, could only pray that his insight was graced by the divine, and not a simple fools errand.  It proved out that he was, in fact graced by the divine.

Orvelios dropped the stone from an unimaginably high height, yet it still struck true, impacting upon the exact critical stress point of the Lightning Rail, shattering the system at that point and opening up a hole that extended over the area of a gorge.  Upon returning to the battlefield, Orvelios was verbally lambasted, and even surrounded by his fellows.  They were angry and confused at the seeming desertion of Orvelios, especially as his return was timed with the supposed retreat of the Cyrans.  As Orvelios struggled to assauge his comrade's emotions, he found that nothing he said was helping, so he simply pointed.  Off to the side at this moment came rushing the Lightning Rail, filled to the brim with the laughing faces of a Cyran strike force, and obviously a design not inherent to anything that House Orien constructed.  Wide eyed, his comrade's watched as the Train traveled past them, and finally, travelled directly onto the sparkling hole in the tracks, the hole over the gorge.  Sparing the gruesome details, Orvelios was praised as a hero for saving his country from many hardships, and he gained a great deal of trust, and autonimity within the Cadre, for he was now trusted to understand his role.

Afterwards Lelivo approached Orvelios, for he was present at the battle as well, and recognized the success for a divine boon.  He held out a closed, ornate box to Orvelios and told him.

"Within here is an item of great legacy, and grace.  It belonged to the visionary Verdandros, the man who was my mentor, and my friend.  He knew much about the world, and he was a great bastion of divine knowledge, power, and sanctity.  He related to me many maxims, and many phrases that I shall keep in my heart forever.  I believe the appropriate one here would be.   "Let not your vision obscure your sight, have your hand guided not by the eyes, but by that which guides the soul.  Only when you find yourself covered from the light inherent in this world, can you see the light inherent in the inner one."  Please accept this gift, for you have truly earned it, and I hope you take these words to heart."

Within this box contained a deep, black veil, it was made of the softest silks, and seemed to draw in light like a water floods into sand.  Upon touching the veil, Orvelios felt a surge of divine power, the remaining legacy of a person who was far closer to the spiritual world then he was to this one.  Orvelios was deeply touched by this gift, and he has made it part of his attire, and his very soul ever since.  The words that accompianed them he has taken into his heart, and placed it as an inseperable part of his life.  (Night Veil of Verdandros)

This event also of course let off sparks for a few people.  House Orien in particular is very vehement about any destruction to its systems, or infringment upon its ability to produce its services.  No action has been taken against Orvelios yet, but Dragonmarked houses have very, very long memories.

After these events, the Stavline Wolves Cadre was retired back to the capital for a period of rest; the Karrnathi military command had found that soldiers fought better if they received periodic breaks from the horrors of war.  This was a new experience for Orvelios, for now he had free roam of the capital city, and while he grew up in this vicinity, he had never done so as an adult.  There also was another problem for him; the majority of the Cadre had their own homes to go back to, and did not take part in the military barracks that were provided, but Orvelios did not really have the sort.  He did not want to impose himself anymore on Jacelyn, for by now she had her own children.  Cadeus was away on a mission, and while Orvelios appreciated his company, he fealt it was best to take in small doses.  At the moment, Orvelios had forgiven Stavline, but he did not want to interfere with his commander's new courtship, the talk of the cadre all along the way back home.  That left only one individual for Orvelios to truly feel together with; that of Lelivo, the person that had given him a window into his very soul.

"I want to learn more about Verdandros and his teachings." Orvelios asked Lelivo when he arrived on his doorstep, nothing on him but the veil that Lelivo had so graciously given him, and his priestly vestments.  For days Lelivo merely turned Orvelios away, sounding distant but not unfriendly towards the idea.  Orvelios started to despair that Lelivo would ever decide to share his knowledge on the man that had spoken words that seemed directed towards Orvelios himself.  However finally, after several weeks of anxious waiting, Lelivo finally beckoned Orvelios inside his abode.  In an instant Orvelios was stunned, for the inside of Lelivo's house had changed drastically since the last time he had been there.  Before it had been a rough, servicable living space with not many accoutrements, but that had turned upside down.  Seperating every space were curtails of deep black silk hanging and pooling down to the ground, on the floor were trailing carpets of night sky blue and gray, seeming to slide under one's feet.  At every point, one could almost make out letters that fairly shined, not with light, but with darkness, coming out clearer and stronger than any source of light could have.

"Meditate in this room, find your way through the unending mazes of the unlit path, and you shall find the true teachings of Verdandros.  I cannot guide you further then this, it is your task to take this step further." Lelivo said to Orvelios, and simply walked out of his own home; Orvelios could never find out where exactly he went too.  Orvelios walked into the room, and he could feel the connection to the divine seeping into his bones, he could feel the infusion of power present in this location, there was no doubt in his mind that Lelivo had prepared for him something that was far beyond anything he had ever encountered, or even heard of, before.

That was the last thing Orvelios remembered about his time inside Lelivo's hostel; the entire section of his memory was blank after this point.  Later he inquired, and he found that he had dissapeared for an entire week within the bounds of Lelivo's home.  As Orvelios walked outside of Lelivo's home, he found himself clothed in completely different attire then he had before.  Bound of his arms and wrists were armbands of an enchanting blue hue, radiating feelings of strength and steadyness, he could feel himself as a veritable bastion from these alone, as if his connection to his soul's path was strengthened far beyond the norm.  (Wrist Bands of the Founder)  In a different manor than that of the before attire, Orvelios also saw a sash of a starless, moonless, night sky tied around his waist.  Again he felt the connection to the different powers and philosophies he followed strengthened, but in this instance the belt gave the feeling of endlessness, that simply concentrating on it would get one lost into the depths of darkness forever.  (Waistband of the Darkwatcher)

Finally, Orvelios felt something different that was not to do with what he was wearing; he could feel his very essence had changed, altered, been infused with a new strength and source than that of anything before.  It took Orvelios many moments of contemplation before he finally saw a visible sign of what had happened to him.  He saw that he cast no shadow, not even in the greatest of lights.  His body seemed to ignore the light, and let it pass through him, not blocking it, simply giving off its color but then letting the rest flow through.

Due to his actions, Orvelios was awarded a tremendous honor, something that would continue to follow into the tradition of the Karrnathi military for generations to come; he was given the chance to take part in a new set of specialized training and philosophy that would allow him and the other learners to truly serve their country both in ideals, and in body.  At the time, Orvelios saw no reason to refuse this honor, the way in which the training was described seemed to cry out the chance to serve his adopted homeland in his own capacity, instead of under the most rigid of command structures.  With what he knew about this new training, he would become a bastion of strength and divine power; his role in the war would graduate from that of a common soldier into a focal point for the battle, as if the Grand Crusader from the boardgame of Conquerers that all Karrnathi learn.
